Free Form: Free Your Imagination

Creativity in design is one of the best ways to ensure your visual messages are noticed, recognized and remembered. Your audience is constantly bombarded with communications – each vying for their attention. Consider these statistics:

  • Email: An estimated 55 billion spam emails were sent each day in June 2006, an increase of 20 billion per day from June 2005. (Wikipedia)

  • Billboards:There were approximately 450,000 billboards on US highways as of 1991. Somewhere between 5,000 and 15,000 are erected each year. (Wikipedia)

  • Direct Mail: 5134 Million items were mailed last year and the overall volume of direct mail has increased by 87% in the last ten years (Direct Mail Information Service)

  • Television: 2 Million TV commercials are seen by the average person by age 65 (TV-Free America)

Don’t let your messages become boring or stilted. Follow these Free Form tips for more creative communications that will take only minutes to produce:

Freedom in Design

Flexibility in Layout

Form Follows Function

Freedom in Design

A primary advantage of AxisTV’s user-friendly interface is the use of a creation template that allows you to generate a basic message bulletin in just minutes:

  1. Name your message

  2. Choose your background

  3. Type in your text

This is an excellent tool for fast, simple design of communications. However, it’s easy to get caught in the “background + text” rut.

The Free Form tools allow you to include graphic images, assign accompanying audio and place each design element in the exact location you desire – unlike the standard text templates. Free Form text options (including animated text) are more elaborate and the direct import of backgrounds and graphics makes creativity convenient and fast.

Take advantage of this freedom by utilizing more design elements to tell your story. Communicate - not with "more" - but with more creativity.

Flexibility in Layout

Instead of a template choosing where your title, text or images are placed, Free Form allows you to directly place, size and move your design elements around the canvas. Experienced designers will appreciate the flexibility of this tool but you don’t need special training to use it.

Creating in Free Form allows you to utilize as much time and deliberation as you want in your design. The steps are easy and the interface is user-friendly:

  • Name your bulletin

  • Choose a background

Free Form allows you to choose from your library, which is displayed in a new window, or to import a background of your choice

  • Assign an audio clip to accompany your message

  • Add unlimited number of sections:

    • Text sections

Convenient tools let you choose each text section’s font, color, style, size, and alignment options

    • Graphic sections

Upload graphics or choose from your AxisTV graphics library

  • Don’t forget to “right-click” in any Free Form element for additional menu options

Free Form allows you to layer your various sections with ‘Push to Back’ and ‘Bring to Front’ options. You can also force sections to snap to margins and center, fill the entire canvas, or change the aspect ratio of a specific section.

The standard options of grouping bulletins, spell checking, and choosing your message’s aspect ratio are also available.

Form Follows Function

The creed of any design is “Form Follows Function”. Get creative with your communications, but remember your goal – to communicate. Design should never obscure or overpower your message:

  • Audiences will look at an image before reading text, and images are five times more memorable than bullet points – so include relevant graphics whenever possible.

  • Remember not to crowd your bulletin with too much text. Don’t forget the 3x5 rule.

  • Try not to use more than two fonts in one message. Using too many fonts reduces readability.

  • Audio is another design element used to attract attention and trigger memory. Remember that audio should be relevant and not distracting.

Whether you’re working in AxisTV Free Form, or designing other visual communications, creativity is paramount to breaking through the barrage of messages your audience receives. Follow these tips and let your imagination run wild.
